Bachelor of Music and Diploma Application Requirements for Fall 2017


General Policies

  • Applications must be submitted by the stated deadlines.
  • Majors that are not pre-screened are guaranteed an audition. Pre-screened majors are reviewed for audition invitations.
  • All applicants invited to audition must do so live in New York. The Juilliard School does not accept video auditions.
  • Those applicants scheduled for auditions will receive notification approximately one month prior to the audition. Pre-screening results will also be sent at that time.
  • No admissions decisions can be made until all credentials and required documents are on file.
  • All applicants are notified of their admissions results via the online application or e-mail. Notification will be sent by the Office of Admissions approximately one month after the audition and no later than April 1, 2017.
  • You may not apply more than two times per degree level in the Music Division if you receive unfavorable results.

Eligibility and Program Length

  1. Undergraduate Music applicants are eligible for either the Bachelor of Music degree or the Diploma. Generally, high school seniors and undergraduate transfers should apply to the B.M. degree.
  2. The four-year undergraduate curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degree provides extensive training in students’ applied majors, comprehensive instruction in music theory and music history, and an introduction to liberal arts disciplines. Candidates for admission must be high school graduates or possess the equivalent of a high school diploma by the time they enroll.
  3. The three-year Diploma program does not include a Liberal Arts curriculum and is intended for a few very gifted undergraduate musicians who, for personal or professional reasons, must pursue a non-degree course of study concentrating almost exclusively on performance. Applicants who wish to apply to the Diploma must contact the Office of Admissions (send an e-mail to musicadmissions@juilliard.edu BEFORE the application deadline) for permission to apply to that program. Candidates for admission must be high school graduates or possess the equivalent of a high school diploma by the time they enroll.   4. Although The Juilliard School does carefully evaluate the transcripts and diplomas earned by applicants, there are no specific courses, GPAs, or class rankings required. Transcripts are reviewed to ascertain scholastic competence sufficient to succeed in course work at the college level, and an essay is required to help evaluate the intellectual and scholastic aptitude of prospective students.
  5. Full-time Barnard or Columbia students have the opportunity to pursue private music lessons at Juilliard through the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange Program while pursuing an academic degree.   6. Double Majors
  • Double majors are very rare at Juilliard, due to the strenuous nature of our performance-based curriculum. It is only possible to double major if both majors are within Classical Music; it is not possible to combine divisions (for example, Music and Drama), or double major in Classical and Jazz Studies.
  • Applicants within Classical Music* who would like to consider double majoring must apply, audition, and be admitted to each major. If offered admission to two majors, applicants must then formally request to double major. The Registrar will review the request to determine if it is possible to complete the curriculum requirements for both majors within five years. It is important to note that there is an additional cost above tuition to double major that would be applicable each year and, in general, double majors require a fifth year of study to complete all requirements. Juilliard scholarship is applicable to one major only; scholarship is not available for the double major fee.

*Please note that it is not possible for piano and voice majors to double major in an orchestral instrument. The requirements for each have significant conflicts which preclude completion within five years.

Application Fee 

The $110 application fee is nonrefundable (the fee for applicants to the B-C-J Exchange only is $35). Payment may be made through the online application using: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express cards, your checking account, or PayPal account. Payments are processed using a secure online payment system.

Fee waivers are available only for eligible high school seniors. Eligible applicants include those who can demonstrate significant financial need by providing one of the following by December 1:

  1. An official College Board fee waiver form (available through high school guidance offices) signed by a high school guidance counselor;
  2. An official SAT fee waiver form signed by a high school guidance counselor;
  3. A letter on school stationery from a college/guidance counselor stating that the applicant qualifies for the free lunch program;
  4. If the applicant can be claimed as a dependent by a family member or guardian, a personal letter describing the family's financial situation.

Applicants who select the fee waiver option must upload one of the above documents to the online application. The file cannot exceed 600 KB in size and should be in .doc, .wpd, .rtf, .xls, .pdf, .docx, .xlsx or .txt format. Please note: .jgp files are not acceptable. You must convert your file to another format if scanning your document. Applicants requesting a fee waiver will not be able to submit their applications without a fee if appropriate documentation is not uploaded to the online application. The Office of Admissions reserves the right to discontinue with any application that does not provide appropriate documentation showing that the applicant qualifies for a fee waiver.

Juilliard Admissions is adopting and promoting a paperless and environmentally friendly application process. Please do not send in any transcripts until after you have received your official audition invitation, and no later than February 15, 2017.

Documentation of secondary schooling is an essential component of the application process. Applicants must demonstrate scholastic competence sufficient to succeed in course work at the college level.

Applicants who have attended a secondary school, conservatory, college, or university prior to filing this application should send the official transcripts of school records after they have received their official audition invitations and no later than February 15. Official transcripts must be in a sealed envelope, or be sent directly from the issuing institution. This applies to U.S. and international applicants.

Graduation From High School:

Candidates for admission must be high school graduates or possess the equivalent of a high school diploma by the time they enroll. Home-schooled applicants, please refer to the Home Schooling Documen­tation information below, and in the Application for Admission.

All applicants who are offered admission must submit an official final transcript indicating their graduation date by July 1, 2017. This applies to both U.S. and international admits. Juilliard reserves the right to rescind admission to any applicant whose file documentation is deemed insufficient and/or incomplete. It is the applicant’s obligation to see that the completed records are filed. Report cards, grade reports, and other student records are not acceptable as final records.

For applicants who are graduates of foreign institutions: those studies must be equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma. Please note that, if The Juilliard School is unable to determine equivalency, an official evaluation may be required (through World Education Services (212) 966-6311). Official transcripts with translations, as needed, are due by February 15, 2017.

Home Schooling Documentation:

The Juilliard School recognizes homeschooling as a viable educational alternative; however, there are important and explicit regulations governing acceptable documentation. We evaluate homeschooled students on the same basis as students from public and private schools: demonstration of academic preparedness for college-level study is a critical component in consideration for admission.

Homeschooled applicants must complete the Homeschooling Information section in the Application for Admission. Your answers will provide guidance to our staff, especially as we evaluate your academic history. The aim is to help the Admissions Committee understand how you have worked to demonstrate mastery of academic and arts subjects, as well as achieve excellence across your curriculum. Anything you or your academic supervisor can do to explain and contextualize your educational circumstances can only be helpful in the Juilliard admissions process.

In addition to completing the Homeschooling Information section of the online Application, you must also submit the following:

1. TRANSCRIPTS. We realize that the transcripts of homeschooled students may be different from those of traditional high school students. Regardless of format, your transcript should include:

a. All courses taken, including those in progress, and the academic year and semester in which each was taken.

b. Assessment of performance (letter grades, percentages, portfolio commentary, etc.) and an explanation of any applicable grading scales.

c. Evidence of official recognition by the school district and/or state department of education.

d. Optional: a full outline of curriculum by subject; reading lists.

e. If you attended a high school for any period of time, you must submit official high school transcripts of any/all high school work.

f. Additionally, if you enrolled in any college courses, you must submit official college transcripts.

2. SAT or ACT. All homeschooled applicants are required to take the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT (with Writing, where offered).

Homeschooling transcripts and SAT/ACTs must be received by February 15Juilliard reserves the right to rescind the admission of any applicant whose file documentation is deemed insufficient and/or incomplete.

General Educational Development Tests (G.E.D.):

High school equivalency diplomas are issued by states to eligible applicants who pass the qualifying examinations. Specific age eligibility and proof thereof are required. The Juilliard School adheres to the regulations governing eligibility established by the New York State Education Department and will accept G.E.D.s from qualified applicants. The Juilliard School will also accept the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (T.A.S.C.).

While there are valid reasons for certain applicants to obtain the G.E.D., it is not a substitute or shortcut for a traditional secondary education. Juilliard's Admissions Committee carefully reviews all candidates' academic records for preparedness for college-level study. In general, the G.E.D. will only be accepted as a supplement to demonstrated high academic achievement.

Applicants who intend to submit a G.E.D. in place of a high school diploma must demonstrate a strong academic history comparable to four years of high school through additional documentation which may include, but is not limited to: high school and/or college transcripts; appropriate homeschooling documentation; submission of standardized test scores such as the SAT or ACT; Advanced Placement (AP) exams, etc.

Important notes:

  1. Applicants who will have a G.E.D. by the time that official transcripts are due (February 15) are strongly encouraged to also submit either the SAT or ACT to demonstrate academic achievment.
  2. Applicants who are homeschooled and will be taking the G.E.D. due to state requirements must provide all required documentation for homeschooling, including transcripts and standardized test scores.

In addition, the School reserves the right to rescind admission to any applicant who does not meet the appropriate state education department regulations as written.

Current Juilliard College Students do not need to request Juilliard transcripts be sent to Admissions.

Formerly enrolled Juilliard College Students do not need to request Juilliard transcripts be sent to Admissions, however, they should provide transcripts for any other institutions attended after their tenure at Juilliard.

Proof of English Language Proficiency

The ability to speak, read, and understand English fluently is an important factor in admissions decisions. All applicants for whom English is not the native language* (regardless of citizenship) must demonstrate English Language Proficiency with a TOEFL, ACT, or SAT score which meets the minimum requirement, with the exception of:

  • those who have attended school(s) where instruction was provided entirely in English, on a full-time basis, for a minimum of seven out of the past 10 years. This may include primary and/or secondary schools for first-time college applicants. For transfer applicants, this may include years spent at an undergraduate institution.

*The Juilliard School defines "native language" as the language first spoken as a child and the primary language spoken at home.

  1. Applicants for whom English is not a native language must submit an official copy of their TOEFL, SAT, or ACT scores by February 15, 2017. Photocopies, faxes, and student copies are not acceptable.
  2. In addition, applicants whose TOEFL scores are below 95 are required to complete an English Language Interview with the Office of International Advisement (Room 245) during the audition period. This interview is an essential component for the Admissions Committee in making admissions decisions. It is important to note that this interview does not replace a TOEFL, SAT, or ACT score, nor can a member of the International Advisement staff waive the English Language Proficiency requirement.
  3. Applicants will not be admitted without an official score on file which meets the minimum guidelines for admission (see above grid). Applicants should take a TOEFL, SAT, or ACT by January 2017 in order to have the score submitted to the Admissions Office by February 15.
  4. Juilliard does not grant exemptions to the English Language Proficiency requirement, regardless of an applicant’s citizenship status.
  5. All admitted undergraduate students must also take the English Language Placement Exam during Orientation at the beginning of the fall semester.
  6. The Juilliard School’s CEEB code is 002340.
  7. The Juilliard School's ACT College Code number is 2778.

  • Juilliard’s Admissions Committee uses your essay(s) to learn more about you as an individual and gain a sense of who you are beyond your application, transcript, and audition.
  • Essays should be 1 - 2 pages, double-spaced, and in a 12 point font.
  • Please note that essays should be written in English (not translated from another language) and be your own original work; your signature upon submission of the application indicates that “all information provided on this application is honestly presented,” which includes authorship of required essays.
  • All applicants to the B.M. or Diploma are required to submit one essay in the online application.
  • Transfer applicants and Current or Formerly enrolled Juilliard college students have additional essay requirements (see below).

1. All applicants to the B.M. or Diploma, choose one of the following essay topics:

  • If you could introduce two artists for a collaborative production, who would they be, and what might they make? Provide details that would encourage us to attend the performance.

  • At Juilliard we encourage students to become advocates for the arts, and to use their artistic talents to improve the world. What kind of social or political responsibilities do you set for yourself as an artist? How do you plan to fulfill them?

2. Transfer applicants in Music (B.M. or Diploma): The decision to transfer is a significant and often difficult one to make. IN ADDITION TO No. 1, above, please explain when the idea of transferring first occurred to you and how that idea developed. (You must submit two essays in total.)

3. Current or Formerly enrolled Juilliard college students applying to the undergraduate program: IN ADDITION TO No. 1, above, please explain your motivation for resuming your studies or applying to another major at The Juilliard School. Students may choose to address academic, artistic, or professional goals that they believe could be accomplished in the Juilliard community. (You must submit two essays in total.)

Optional additional essay topic: If you have a unique or specific personal or academic history about which you feel the Admissions Committee should be aware, please feel free to upload an additional, optional short essay to share with the Committee. Please note that this essay is totally optional, and should only be submitted if an explanation is required for an unusual circumstance. Some examples might be: reasons for taking a gap year; an unusually low or poor grade, semester, or year on a transcript, etc.

Your essay should be submitted through the online application. Please do not also submit a hard copy of your essay via post.

Letters of Recommendation

To register a teacher as a recommender, log onto your Student Status Page. Click on the "Recommendations" section (this portion of the application is available even after submission). In the "Recommendations" section, you can add, delete, or send a reminder to a recommender. After registering your teacher's name and e-mail address in this section, the application system will send an automatic e-mail to your teacher which provides instructions on how to submit the letter of recommendation online. Additionally, you can track whether the letter has been submitted on your status page. As an alternative, teachers may e-mail their letters of recommendation directly to musicadmissions@juilliard.edu. Letters MUST be submitted/sent directly by the teachers. Photocopies, scans, and forwarded e-mails submitted by the applicant will NOT be accepted.

All undergraduate applicants invited to audition must submit TWO letters of recommendation:

1. Academic recommendation: A letter from a high school academic teacher, preferably in English, history, or other language arts course work. The impetus behind this requirement is to gain insight into the applicant’s abilities in English and should acknowledge the applicant’s speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension abilities.

  • If needed, a college professor recommendation would suffice for transfer applicants.
  • Homeschooled applicants should submit a recommendation from someone other than a parent who can address the issues listed above. In addition, this recommendation should address social maturity and ability to integrate well with other students and colleagues.

2. Artistic Recommendation: A letter from a teacher, conductor, coach, or artistic mentor. Juilliard continues to renew its efforts to identify and educate leaders in the profession, students who can be outstanding performers and also effective advocates, collaborators, teachers, and community partners. In addition to addressing the applicant’s talent and accomplishment, the letter should also discuss the following individual characteristics which indicate potential for success in the field: 1. Perseverance; 2. Dedication; 3. Collegiality; and 4. Leadership.

Late Application/Pre-Screening Materials Policies

In general, The Juilliard School does not accept late applications or late pre-screening materials. However, the School may accept a late application, and/or late pre-screening materials, depending upon the number of applications received for a particular major. Please note: because there is no guarantee that a late application will be accepted for any major, we strongly advise you to submit your application by the published deadline.

Admissions expects to have final word on whether late applications will be accepted for music by 5 p.m. (Eastern) on Friday, December 2, 2016. Please check back here on December 2 and do not contact the Office regarding the submission of a late application. If a particular major is not listed, that means we cannot accept late applications for that department.

  • Non pre-screened majors: typically would be accepted only if spaces remain available in the audition schedule after all on-time applicants have been scheduled. Late applicants to non pre-screened majors would not have an opportunity to request preferred audition dates as all on-time applicants will have already been scheduled. Instead, they would be scheduled in whichever appropriate audition slots remain. ("Appropriate" slots are those in which applicants would be auditioning among candidates applying to the same degree level.)
  • Pre-screened majors: late applications, and/or late pre-screening materials, may be accepted, however, late applicants to pre-screened majors are not guaranteed review of their materials. Regardless of whether the School reviews these materials, or whether the applicant is invited to audition, application and pre-screening fees are not refundable. AFTER all on-time applicants' materials have been reviewed, IF there is still room in the audition schedule, THEN late pre-screened applicants' materials may be reviewed. Late applicants would be notified whether their materials were reviewed by the end of January 2017. If late materials were considered, pre-screening results would be sent by the end of January as well. Late applicants invited to audition would be scheduled in whichever appropriate audition slots remain. ("Appropriate" slots are those in which applicants would be auditioning among candidates applying to the same degree level.)

Please do not call the Office with inquiries regarding late applications and/or late pre-screening materials. Check back after 5 p.m. (Eastern) on Friday, December 2, 2016.

December 2, 2016 Update

Juilliard will accept late music applications for the following majors:

  • Bass Trombone
  • Double Bass
  • Guitar
  • Harp
  • Horn
  • Jazz Studies (all instruments)
  • Oboe
  • Organ
  • Percussion
  • Tenor Trombone
  • Viola

If you wish to submit a late application:

1. Send your:

  • First and Last Names
  • Date of Birth
  • Preferred e-mail address

to musicadmissions@juilliard.edu, with LATE APPLICATION - Your Major in the subject line (for example: LATE APPLICATION - Viola). Declare your intent to submit an application by the extended deadline (see below).

2. The Office of Admissions must receive this e-mail before 12:00 PM (noon) EST on Monday, December 5, 2016.

3. After 12 PM on Dec. 5, Admissions will start your application for you and will let you know when you can log in to complete it.

4. You will be able to access your application and submit all of your required application materials (including the application fee and pre-screening materials if applicable) between 5:00 PM EST on Monday, December 5 and 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 only.

Please note: Your application will not be considered complete unless all of the above steps are followed. If you are requesting an application fee waiver, you will hear from a staff member only if your request is denied.
